By the time you receive this issue of the Rhumb Line I should be about 400 miles east of the Bahamas. That is if all goes as planned. Still time enough for the weather gods to alter our plans for delivery from the BVI to Maryland. This is a trip that should take about ten days, however the last one of similar track took twelve days to reach Cape Fear inlet. I seem to remember experiencing some period of counter currents on the eastern side of the stream.

Although we plan to travel a rhumb line straight from the BVI to Maryland it would be more fun to come back through the Exumas and across the Bahama banks. While we would not stop, it just seems to be more scenic to see the islands go by and the lights at night. Actually the weather or fear of a change may cause us to elect this route. A couple of more days would be added to the travel schedule, but if its safer we will definitely go this route.

Another consideration will be the trade winds that normally do a little shift from the prevailing east to a somewhat southwesterly during the summer months. I have always thought that is why many hurricanes turn and go up the Atlantic. And a hurricane is another concern that can occur before we are actually at sea. While the first storm Alex, appears to be headed toward Mexico, what about storm number two? Will it be coming toward our track? So, I really don't know were I'll be when you receive this issue, but rest assured that I'll be in the Atlantic somewhere. Out there in that beautiful ocean discussing worldly issues and wondering why I did not get on a sailboat out of the military and explore all the oceans. I know, I know. Life has so many twists and turns. I just live to savor each day.

With regret this trip causes me to miss the Beaufort outing and the July general meeting. From the planning presented by Laura Simpson, I feel certain that the Beaufort cruise is in good hands and if you did not have a good time it was your own fault. And for sure the general meeting will be another highlighted presentation by our own "Vanna" alias Tammy Campbell. Enjoy and God bless.
